LCOC Research Published in Early Childhood Education Journal
A research team of the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, including three Le Moyne College Faculty – Sunita Singh, Ph.D., Monica R. Sylvia, Ph.D., and Frank Ridzi, Ph.D., Director of Research & Community Initiatives at the Central New York Community Foundation – were recently published in the Early Childhood Education Journal. They studied the literacy practices of Syracuse Burmese refugee families and their interactions with the Imagination Library and Storycircles programs. Participant observations and interviews with parents and program providers indicated that, while the family literacy practices mostly centered on oral traditions, participation in the two programs led to the familiarity and use of print-based forms of literacy. This research was funded by the Sociological Initiatives Foundation.
